The European Union has given Audi a permit to equip its R8 sports car with all LED headlights. Audi has developed this LED technology in cooperation with Philips Lumileds Lighting of California and Automotive Lighting from Reutlingen Germany.

The head lights in the R8 consist of 54 LED light sources. The LEDs are arranged in clusters or “arrays” which act as single light sources. And as such these lights contain within them fully functional daytime running lights, turn signals, dipped low beam and high beam lights.

The LED lights in the R8 are said to consume low amounts of electricity requiring only 6 watts for the daytime running lights and 50 watts for the low beam headlights.

LEDs are a type of silicon based semiconductor which changes electricity into light. The light given off by the LEDs are 10 times faster than a conventional filament bulb. In addition, compared to conventional halogen and xenon bulbs LED lighting systems require less energy, are more durable and are smaller in size.

Even though the exact time of availability was not stated, we can expect to see the R8 equipped with the all LED headlights available to customers shortly.
