BMW presented its new X6 concept vehicle at the IAA Frankfurt auto show. If past shows are any indication, the production version of the BMW X6 should look nearly identical to the concept. A hybrid version, with a 20% increase in fuel economy was also shown along side the X6 concept.

The X6 is based on the BMW x5 but is longer, wider and rides lower to the ground. It also differs from the X5 because of its considerably arched roofline that will result in a decreased room in the rear. As a result the X6 is designed to accomadate 4 passengers instead of 7 like the X5. But BMW claims that what it losses in utility it will more than make up for with ride and handling ability.

As a fan of BMWs I’m undecided on this vehicle. I will wait until seeing it in real life before commenting on its looks. And there is no doubt that some utility will be lost because of its design, but I’m waiting to see how it drives.

When the BMW X5 was released it took SUV (or as BMW calls it SAV) driving dynamics to another level and the X5 was a big success. If BMW have been able to improve the driving dynamics once again with the X6 then I believe they will have another hit on their hands.
