Toyota’s fuel cell hybrid vehicle (FCHV) , along with another back up vehicle , was able to complete a 350 mile trip in Japan without the need for re-fueling. The trip began which began at a hydrogen fueling station near the Osaka Prefectural Government Office and ended at Toyota’s Mega Web theme park in Toyota.
At the complete of the trip the FCHV still had a 30 percent of its fuel remaining, which when calculated would give it a fuel range of 480 miles, twice the range of any other fuel cell car.
The FCHVs used now are 25% more efficient than those of the past because of improvements to fuel cells and power management systems. Toyota’s FCHV used 4 of new tanks which can hold hydrogen at twice the pressure of previous tanks. Toyota has been testing FCHVs in the streets of Japan since 2001 .
