In the area of consumer electronics most new technologies start out as expensive when it first enters the market and then its price eventually comes down until its relatively inexpensive. This is what appears to be occurring with Blu-Ray drive technology.
Blu-Ray drives were very expensive when they first came to the market but now it appears prices are starting to come down. In what may be an example of this trend Philips and Lite-on have announced a BD-ROM drive priced at $199. The DH-401S BD-ROM drive does not write to discs, however, it does have the following capabilities:
- it reads single- and dual-layer BD-R/RE/ROM discs at up to 4X speeds
- it reads single- or double-layer DVD±R or DVD-ROM discs at 12X speeds
- it reads single or double-layer DVD±RW discs at at 8X speeds
- it reads DVDs, single-layer or double-layer media at a maximum of 4X speeds
- it reads Single Layer DVD ±R or DVD-ROM at a maximum of 12X, and double Layer DVD±R and single Layer DVD±RW at a 8X maximum.
- it reads CD-R/RW/ROM at a maximum of 32X.
