The internet service that we get in the US and Canada is really slow and expensive in comparison to what users get in other countries. And now the divide will grow even further. This is because starting in October, homes in Japan will be able to subscribe to an internet service which use fibre optics to allow them a download at a speed of 1 Gigabit/sec. Yes 1 Gigabit per second!

On October 1, 2008 telco KDDI, which also owns the number-two wireless carrier, au, will launch the first FTTH gigabit service called the Hikari One Home Gigabit. The service area will cover Hokkaido and the Tokyo area and will cost only ¥5,560 ($52.47) a month.

Wow! That’s cheaper than what I was paying for my 6 megabits/sec Highspeed DSL connection.

$52.47 for 1 Gbit/sec downloads? I’ll take one subscription please.
