Last week while watching Avatar in the theater a friend of mine commented on how cool the transparent touchscreens and tablets used in the movie were. I then remembered reading about transparent display concepts in 2009 and thinking we may have such devices soon.
Now as further confirmation that devices like those used in the movie are indeed on there way we need to only look at devices like the laptop with the transparent screen and the Samsung Ice Touch.
Displayed at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, (CES), the concept laptop has a 14-inch transparent AMOLED screen, a transparency of 38%, and a resolution of 960 X 540. It was created by the same group that is developing AMOLED technology.
Also displayed at the CES was Samsung’s new MP3 player the Ice Touch( also know as the YP-H1). Its really unique feature is of course, is its transparent screen. The Ice Touch’s 2-inch AMOLED transparent touch screen allows the user to view and use the menu from either the front or the back of the player.
The volume buttons and a power/hold switch are on the bottom edges of the player and the color cover on the bottom half of the player can be changed to either pink, purple gray or blue.
The player support a wide variety of audio and video formats including MP3, WMA, OGG, FLAC, AAC, M4A, WAV, MP3HD, MPEG4, WMV, H.264, Xvid, and DivX. It also includes support for photo viewing. The Samsung Ice Touch will be available in 16GB form during the first or second quarter of 2010. Pricing was not released.
