Later this month in Japan LG electronics will be releasing their new lcd computer monitor, the W2284F-PF.
It features a 22-inch screen, 30000:1 contrast ratio, WSXGA+ (1680X1050) resolution, a brightness of 300 cd/m² and a 2 millisecond response time.
It also comes equipped with with “f-Engine” chip which supposedly improves picture quality.
The W2284F-PF will be released to the Japanese market on August 29, 2008. LG has not released any information on pricing nor its availability in the US.
Samsung continues to show itself a pioneer in LCD panel technology.
It has created a new LCD technology called “Blue Phase”.
Blue Phase mode will allow images to be displayed at 240 Hertz or higher, allowing for even more realistic moving images then what is currently available from current LCDs which display images at 120 Hertz.
The Blue Phase panels do not require the overdrive circuits needed in current LCD panels. The new panels are also cheaper to produce because they do not require liquid crystal alignment layers like today’s standard LCDs.
This new technology is called “Blue Phase”because of the bluish hues seen while in operating mode.
Samsung will unveil a 15” model at the SID (Society for Information Display) 2008 symposium and they expect to mass produce the Blue Phase LCD in 2011.
Thankfully it looks as if Samsung is beginning to bring the excellent contrast ratios of their home theater lcds to their pc lcd monitors. Samsung’s new line of pc monitors are part of the “Touch of Color” line which feature a black glossy face with a red accent. These are the first pc lcds to have a dynamic contrast ratio of 20,000:1.
There are four models in the lineup, the T190 (priced at $259), the T220 (priced at $359) the T240 (priced at $499) and T260 (priced at $599). All the monitors feature MagicColor intelligent color control, MagicBright Dynamic Contrast control, Samsung’s SoftPower standby mode and Samsung’s Multi Screen function.
The T190 and T220 have response time of 2ms and are available now. The T240 and T260 have response time of 5ms and are in July.
Sony once again raises the bar in the flat panel display thickness (or should that be thinness?) war with its new 0.3mm thick OLED display.

In Korea Samsung has launched two new plasma television models which have 3-D capabilities. These televisions, the PAVV Cannes 450 and the full HD PAVV Cannes 550, can be used to display 3-D images with the aid of special pc software and 3-D glasses. I have been hesitant to upgrade the crt monitor on my desktop computer to a LCD monitor. While I admire the LCD’s thin profile and know that it would allow me to have more space on my desk, the picture quality of many LCDs I have used have not been good.
The reason for this is the fact most LCD monitors have poor contrast ratios. With contrast ratios generally topping off at 500:1, 700:1 and 800:1, I know that when I watch video clips, dvds and view pictures on the screen the black reproduction will not be very good and therefore the picture quality as a whole will not be very good.
However, with news of Samsung’s new multipurpose LCD monitors I maybe reconsidering my position. Samsung’s new SyncMaster LCDs, the 2493HM and 2693HM, both feature 16:10 aspect ratios, 1920 x 1200 resolution, a static contrast ratio of 1000:1, DVI and HDMI inputs, D-sub, built-in speakers, a 5ms response time and a 3-year warranty.
In addition to those features the 2493HM has a 24-inch screen and a dynamic contrast ratio of 10000:1, while the 2693HM has a 25.5-inch screen and a dynamic contrast ratio of 3000:1. The 2493HM is priced at $599 and the 2693HM is priced at $699, both monitors are available now.
It appears that the higher contrast ratios of the big screen LCDs are slowly making their way to PC monitors. LG Electronics has developed a line of LCD displays for PCs which offer very high contrast ratios.
The new LCDs will have a Digital Fine Contrast ratio of 5000:1. As well these displays are said to offer the best picture in terms of clarity and sharpness of any LCDs available today.
LG’s product group manager, Dennis Yeo, stated: “Our record-breaking contrast ratio will offer consumer and business users alike, an unparalleled viewing experience with the very latest in screen technology.”
LG’s high contrast LCD PC displays will ship in the UK in November and December of 2007. More product details should follow shortly. And hopefully some info about a US shipping date will also appear soon.

This week Samsung showed off three new notebook LCDs at the Flat Panel Display International show in Yokohoma, Japan.
The most interesting of these three was the 15.4 inch WXGA screen with a white LED backlight. This backlight is said to use 40% less power than Samsung’s other color LEDs. And the white LED screen has a contrast ratio of 10000 :1, excellent for a LCD screen of this size, or any size for that matter.
The LED technology that Samsung uses in this LCD and its larger LCD televisions is able to provide light to areas of the screen that need it while completely turning off light to areas that do not. This allows for a much greater contrast ratio than conventional LCDs.
The other two standard notebook displays were unique in the fact that they were true 16:9 ratio widescreens while the majority of other notebook widescreens are 16:10 aspect ratio. The displays, in 16 inch and 18.4 inch sizes, deliver 90% color saturation and have a contrast ratio of 800:1. Samsung stated that these screens could deliver up to 114% better screen efficiency.
The white LED backlit screen should go into production during the second half of 2008 while the 16:9 ratio widescreens will be available during the first half of 2008.
Sony’s XEL-1 OLED tv is only 3mm thick. Yes 3mm. It’s screen is 11 inches diagonally and has a resolution of 960 x 540. It’s got a contrast ratio of 1,000,000 to 1.
