Earlier this week Hitachi announced that they will be releasing a new group of 2.5-inch hard drives called the MHZ2 BJ series. These hard drives run at a speed of 7200 RPM and the largest one has a capacity of 320GB. They use only use 2.3W of power to perform read or write operations. A small portable surge protector with USB ports is a simple but great idea, and I’m sure this product will be used by many people, including frequent travelers, and students. I’m surprised no one else has brought a product like this to the market already.

Western Digital has the biggest notebook hard drive on the block. It comes in the form of their new 320GB Scorpio Serial ATA hard drive for laptops.

The 2.5-inch hard drive (model number WD3200BEVT) has a rotational speed of 5400 rpm, an access time of 12 ms, a 8MB cache and uses 3Gb/s SATA.

Other notable features are its built-in shock protection and WhisperDrive technology. Its also slim, with its 9.5mm form-factor. The 320GB Scorpio is available now for $199.
