This week Samsung showed off three new notebook LCDs at the Flat Panel Display International show in Yokohoma, Japan.
The most interesting of these three was the 15.4 inch WXGA screen with a white LED backlight. This backlight is said to use 40% less power than Samsung’s other color LEDs. And the white LED screen has a contrast ratio of 10000 :1, excellent for a LCD screen of this size, or any size for that matter.
The LED technology that Samsung uses in this LCD and its larger LCD televisions is able to provide light to areas of the screen that need it while completely turning off light to areas that do not. This allows for a much greater contrast ratio than conventional LCDs.
The other two standard notebook displays were unique in the fact that they were true 16:9 ratio widescreens while the majority of other notebook widescreens are 16:10 aspect ratio. The displays, in 16 inch and 18.4 inch sizes, deliver 90% color saturation and have a contrast ratio of 800:1. Samsung stated that these screens could deliver up to 114% better screen efficiency.
The white LED backlit screen should go into production during the second half of 2008 while the 16:9 ratio widescreens will be available during the first half of 2008.

The Nightlighter is an extremely well thought out device. Its design totally obsoletes standard flashlights.
The Nightlighter has two LED based beams. One of the beams is down-ward facing, and wide angle allowing it to illuminate the area immediately at your feet.
The other beam is forward-facing, and narrow angle allowing it to illuminate those things in the distance. This dual-beam design eliminates the need to continuously move the flashlight around as you maneuver in dark areas.
The handle of the Nightlighter is also unique. Its been designed with ergonomics in mind, and thus has be molded into a shape that makes it comfortable to hold. The Nightlighter is priced at $29.95 and is available now.
Samsung has included a very unique feature in its latest HDTV DLP models, that is the ablity to display the video content in 3-D with an optional set of special LCD shutter glasses and pc software.
