Earlier this week OCZ released information on its upcoming PCI-Express based SSD, the Z-Drive.

“It is our goal to deliver tailored SSD solutions for the complete spectrum of high performance applications,” said Eugene Chang, Vice President of Product Management at the OCZ Technology Group. “Designed for ultra high performance consumers, the Z-Drive takes the SATA bottleneck out of the equation by employing the ultra fast PCI-Express architecture with a RAID controller and four Vertex controllers configured in four-way RAID 0 within an all-in-one product, making this solution ideal for applications that put a premium on both storage performance and maximum capacity.”

Utilizing a combined 256MB of local cache and an onboard RAID controller the Z-Drive is capable of speeds up to 510MB/s read and 480MB/s write. The drive also features ultra-fast data access, lower power consumption,  and superior durability in comparison to traditional disk-based hard drives.

The Z-Drives will come in  of 250GB, 500GB and 1 TB sizes. No prices were announced, but looking at the performance specs alone these appear to be the Lamborghini of hard drives so expect them to be priced accordingly.

Belkin has created a mini surge protector that contains 3 AC outlets and 2 USB ports which can only be used for charging devices.

A small portable surge protector with USB ports is a simple but great idea, and I’m sure this product will be used by many people, including frequent travelers, and students. I’m surprised no one else has brought a product like this to the market already.

Belkin’s Mini Surge protector is available now and is priced at $24.99.

samsung_2693hm.jpg

I have been hesitant to upgrade the crt monitor on my desktop computer to a LCD monitor. While I admire the LCD’s thin profile and know that it would allow me to have more space on my desk, the picture quality of many LCDs I have used have not been good.

The reason for this is the fact most LCD monitors have poor contrast ratios. With contrast ratios generally topping off at 500:1, 700:1 and 800:1, I know that when I watch video clips, dvds and view pictures on the screen the black reproduction will not be very good and therefore the picture quality as a whole will not be very good.

However, with news of Samsung’s new multipurpose LCD monitors I maybe reconsidering my position. Samsung’s new SyncMaster LCDs, the 2493HM and 2693HM, both feature 16:10 aspect ratios, 1920 x 1200 resolution, a static contrast ratio of 1000:1, DVI and HDMI inputs, D-sub, built-in speakers, a 5ms response time and a 3-year warranty.

In addition to those features the 2493HM has a 24-inch screen and a dynamic contrast ratio of 10000:1, while the 2693HM has a 25.5-inch screen and a dynamic contrast ratio of 3000:1. The 2493HM is priced at $599 and the 2693HM is priced at $699, both monitors are available now.
