IBM and Sony have created a smaller version of the Cell chip which serves as the heart of the Playstation 3 game console.
The new chip is 45nm, compared to the currently used 65nm chip, that is pictured above. As expected the new Cell chip has some noticeable benefits when used, besides it being 34% smaller, it uses 40% less energy which also means less heat production and a smaller space requirement.
In addition, the 45nm chip is also cheaper to produce and this may in turn lead to a lower priced system on the consumer side as well.

In a move that did not surprise anybody Sony finally announced this week that the 40GB version of its Playstation 3 was coming to the US. It will be released November 2, include the Spider-man 3 movie on Blu-Ray disc and be priced at $399.
Of special note is the fact that it is not backwards compatible with Playstation 2 games. It does however include the Blu-ray drive, a HDMI output, a Cell Broadband Engine, two USB ports, and a integrated Wi-Fi connection.
Sony also reduced the price of the 80 GB version of the PS3 by $100 and it will now cost $499. This is great news and hopefully they will make the white version of the game console available to US customers as well.

This week Sony announced that they will be selling their 40GB Playstation 3 game consoles in Japan. In addition to the black console the Japanese market will also be getting the ceramic white version pictured above. The consoles will be priced at 39,980 Yen (which is approximately $340) . Sony’s 40GB PS3 will be available to Japanese buyers on November 11th.
My guess is that we’ll also see the US version of the 40GB PS3 sometime in November as well. I think with the new low price many people who once considered it too expensive may now be interested in purchasing it and also that Sony will want to capitalize on the upcoming shopping season.
