Two of the most anticipated announcements made at the 2008 Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association (CEDIA) Expo featured Sony’s new KDL-52XBR7 and KLV-40ZX1M LCD HDTVs.

The KDL-52XBR7 (pictured) features include a 52-inch screen, a contrast ratio of 80,000:1, and a screen resolution of 1920 X 1080 lines. But its most interesting feature is its 240Hz refresh rate. This is said to improve the appearance of moving objects. The KDL-52XBR7 will be the first LCD HDTV to reach the market with this feature. …Continue reading … »

It is surprising to hear that Sony has decided to bring its Soutina speaker to the market. It was originally presented as a concept.

A few years ago Sony eliminated several of their high-end products as part of a plan to increase the profitability of their consumer electronics divisions. Their decision to bring the Soutina (model number NSA-PF1) to the market may be a sign that things have turned around for Sony.

The Sony Soutina is a omni-directional speaker which features a glass tube which vibrates and expands to release sound 36o degrees around the speaker. The specifications are as follows:

  • frequency response of 50Hz – 20,000Hz
  • subwoofer (13cm)
  • medium speaker (7cm)
  • a tweeter constructed from organic glass
  • measurements: 325X1845X325mm
  • weight: 12.5kg

Those interested in the Sony Soutina should be be prepared for high-end prices, as it will will cost 6,500 Euros or approximately $10101.

In a move that did not surprise anybody Sony finally announced this week that the 40GB version of its Playstation 3 was coming to the US. It will be released November 2, include the Spider-man 3 movie on Blu-Ray disc and be priced at $399.

Of special note is the fact that it is not backwards compatible with Playstation 2 games. It does however include the Blu-ray drive, a HDMI output, a Cell Broadband Engine, two USB ports, and a integrated Wi-Fi connection.

Sony also reduced the price of the 80 GB version of the PS3 by $100 and it will now cost $499. This is great news and hopefully they will make the white version of the game console available to US customers as well.

This week Sony announced that they will be selling their 40GB Playstation 3 game consoles in Japan. In addition to the black console the Japanese market will also be getting the ceramic white version pictured above. The consoles will be priced at 39,980 Yen (which is approximately $340) . Sony’s 40GB PS3 will be available to Japanese buyers on November 11th.

My guess is that we’ll also see the US version of the 40GB PS3 sometime in November as well. I think with the new low price many people who once considered it too expensive may now be interested in purchasing it and also that Sony will want to capitalize on the upcoming shopping season.
